In October 2006, Langkawi was rebranded as Langkawi Geopark to give it a fresh new outlook to rekindle tourism activity through the introduction of new products in Langkawi. The recognition from UNESCO and the enlisting of Langkawi amongst other world geoparks will surely make Langkawi Geopark recognized globally. (There are already 50 geoparks under the UNESCO banner). Under UNESCO, a Geopark is described as to consist more than just rocks and it would include invlovement of the community especailly in relation to tourism. The whole 99 islands of Langkawi represents Langkawi Geopark. Every rock structure that emerges from the ocean floor, every corner of the lush tropical forest and every kampung or villages form part of Langkawi Geopark. It also has geology of heritage value or natural beauty that can be appreciated and should be safeguarded by all. It also include biodiversity - fauna and flora: and also most importantly, active participation of the local community. There are 3 Geoforest Parks within Langkawi Geopark: 1. Machinchang Geoforest Park 2. Kilim Geoforest Park Tropical island Karst landscape (lime stone), unique and amongst the most beautiful in the world formed from erosions, weathering and climatic changes.
